While persons not involved in the game of golf may have difficulty understanding a sport that is innately as respectful of others as golf, well it is a fact. Golfers are usually a respectful group and this also applies to damage they do to the golf greens. Most golfers carry a golf divot repair tool in order to repair the damage that an iron or a ball hitting with force will do to the greens.

The turf is generally a very sturdy grass but golf balls hitting it can leave a depression. Also using an iron for a very long drive can result in a tear in the grass where a tuft of grass will usually be several yards away. It is considered unacceptable in most courses to leave such damage without repairing it, and most golfers carry along the necessary repair tool in order to be sure they are prepared.

Divot refers to two types of damage to the turf. In the first type a dent in the ground is made by the impact of the ball hitting the grass. In the second type, grass has actually been scraped from the ground from the force of a club. For the second type of divot repair can be as simple as replacing the plug of grass and tamping it down gently. If the club provides cups of sand on the cart that is usually a hint to use sand to repair the divot.

A slug of turf scraped from the ground usually lies five to fifteen yards in front of the golfer in the direction that the ball went. On the other hand a divot created by the golf ball hitting the surface will be located where the ball first hit the turf and not usually where it ends up. When that happens the golfer may want to search the area carefully for the divot as it could be some distance from the spot the golf ball finally stopped at.

A special divot tool is normally used to repair divots created by a ball hitting the turf. Once the depression is located the pronged end of the tool should be inserted into the divot and then the grass lifted gently to help even it out. A deeper depression may require a little more rocking and adjustment in order to leave the turf as perfect as it was in the beginning.

There are some consequences for the rare golfer who forgets or ignores the common courtesy of divot repair. In most cases the staff at the course will attempt to educate the offender on the importance of repairing damage immediately. For repeat offenders the golfer can actually be ejected from the greens. A divot repair tool is one of those important courtesies in golfing.

A divot repair kit is probably the least expensive accessory a golfer may buy. It will however save dirty looks from other golfers and possible expulsion from the greens. It also will help assure the green is as flawless and beautiful the next visit as it was the first visit.
